I spend a lot of time discussing topics around BOTOX® Cosmetic and filling agents like Juvéderm®. I especially like writing about fillers. I am amazed at the things they can do to help people be in control of how they age, but there are so many other things that we do at ReNue to help people with their skin wellness. What do I mean by that?
The Skin Wellness Check at ReNue
I spend a lot of time doing what we call “skin wellness checks.” This might be someone coming in because their hairdresser spotted something on their head that they were worried about or a spouse or significant other noticing something on their partner’s back or an area that can’t be seen easily. This is important, and once in a while we spot something during our skin exams that is important and needs to be biopsied. We perform many skin biopsies, which means taking a small sample of the skin (after injecting some local anesthetic of course) and then putting it in a medical preservative and sending it off to the lab. It takes a week to get the result back and most of the time the result is not anything to worry about and we have in turn created some peace of mind about something you might be losing sleep over.
Addressing Sun Damage
Sometimes, people have really abused their skin over the years. I am part of the “no sunscreen” generation myself, and as children we often had many burns after coming out of our cold winters in Calgary. It is not our fault; we just didn’t know any better. This increases our risk for skin cancers, and patients will come in annually or sometimes more often for head-to-toe exams. And… I mean head-to-toe and looking in most nooks and crannies for anything that could be of concern. Hint… Wear a tank top and shorts to these visits if you can. Otherwise, we can provide a gown for you to change into. This is a good opportunity to discuss preventive skin care including sun protection and anything we can do to reverse sun damage. We often spray sun-damaged skin lesions with liquid nitrogen and then let healthy skin grow in from underneath. Sometimes laser skin rejuvenation or peels need to be incorporated to improve damaged skin and sometimes better skin protection and careful observation is the trick. We can even put you on our annual recall list which serves as a good reminder if you wish.
