Temperatures are rising, mask mandates are dropping, and now more than ever, our faces, and the features that define them are on full display! For years, we’ve benefited from hiding behind a mask (who hasn’t felt the relief of covering up a pimple with a face mask?). Now, it’s hard not to notice our biggest insecurities.
Our chin frames our face and are a major component of our facial symmetry. Beauty of course is in the eye of the beholder, but studies have found a correlation between the degree of symmetry in a person’s face, to their perceived level of attractiveness. So when an extra layer of fat develops below the chin or skin weakens and sags, it can dramatically change our appearance. The causes of this are varied, from genetics, to diet and weight, age, and even posture, but thankfully, the treatments available are highly effective, no matter the cause.
In the medical community, we refer to “double chins” as submental fullness (it has a softer ring to it, don’t you think?). In our clinics, we rely on several different non-surgical treatments to target the area, either by ridding the area of fat cells for a slimmer chin and jawline or defining the shape of the area through BOTOX® or other injectables. Learn more about the non-surgical chin treatments we offer to discover which one best fits your needs.
CoolSculpting works by freezing fat cells. As these cells freeze, they go through a process called apoptosis where the cells die, and the body naturally eliminates them over a couple of months. We typically recommend up to five treatments to adequately treat the area. While highly effective, the treatment is one of the more painful options. Still, it’s a far cry from the pain and recovery of surgery, and a more affordable option too. Pricing starts at $750 per treatment, compared to surgical chin implants, which can cost anywhere from $3,000 up to $5,000. If you’re looking to skip an invasive procedure, CoolSculpting is definitely worth learning about.
The Benefits of Belkyra
Belkyra is relatively new to Canada, but popular in the United States, where it’s been used for nearly two years as a non-surgical alternative to dissolving fat. Belkyra is an injectable that dissolves fat, much in the same way that our gallbladder operates. When we consume fat, our gallbladder releases bile which creates a chemical reaction with the fat to break it down. Our patients have noticed improvements in as little as one treatment, though we typically recommend three to four treatments for best results. The injections are relatively painless, and a full treatment plan costs between $499 and $2,999. Side effects include minor numbness and burning immediately after the procedure, and swelling that lasts between a couple of days to a few weeks.
The Ins and Outs of Injectables
Injectables, or dermal fillers, like Juvéderm, are soft tissue fillers that are injected under the skin at different depths to fill areas and create volume. This is how they differ from BOTOX® , which is mainly used to treat fine lines and deep wrinkles. Injectables target the loss of facial volume that often occurs with ageing. Injectables can improve the look of the chin by filling sagging skin, creating definition for the look of stronger bone structure, or smoothing areas where the skin is dimpled. These treatments are effective and affordable, they typically cost between $750 and $1,500. But they are temporary, lasting anywhere from several months to a few years.
All About Botox
BOTOX® is a popular injectable used in many ways to shape and smooth dimpled skin around the chin, and lift sagging skin along the jawline and around the mouth. It’s also the most affordable of our treatments, with injections costing between $90 and $150. After a topical anesthetic is applied to the treatment area, the procedure is relatively pain-free, with zero downtime. Our team of experts is highly skilled at using BOTOX® to treat nearly any concern around the chin. We’ll have that frown turned upside down in no time!
